Fashions on the Field: Make A Statement!

Fashions on the Field: How to Make a Statement at Ekka’s Most Stylish Competition

This year the Royal Queensland Show's (Ekka) most stylish competition is the annual Fashions on the Field Competition Presented by Brisbane Racing Club. This prestigious showcase of some of Ekka's most glamorous competitors is steeped in tradition. On August 11, fashion forward ladies and gentlemen will go toe to toe at XXXX Stockmen's Bar & Grill.

This year's Fashions on the Field Ekka includes six competition classes:

Best Dressed Lady (18-40 years)
Best Dressed Lady (40 years and over)
Best Dressed Gentleman (18 years and over)
Best Dressed Junior (15-17 years)
Best Dressed Pair
Best Millinery / Headwear (Unisex)

How to Enter the Competition

For those keen to steal the limelight from the Thoroughbreds as they show off their most stylish formal spring season race wear, they must enter first. The Fashions on the Field Competition entries are now open here, up until August 10. You can also find all the finer details in the Fashions on the Field schedule here.

What the Judges Are Looking For

If you're wondering what to wear, it's all in the detail! From colour, pattern and style to accessories and even confidence on stage, be prepared to be judged from head to toe. Whether you're all about spring florals or keeping it tailored and classic, be sure to put your best foot (and hat) forward. For full judging criteria and other style tips, entrants can find everything they need to know in the competition schedule here.

Style Tips to Stand Out in 2025

Following the lead from the Ekka's iconic Natural Fibres Fashion Parades presented by Channel 7, the versatility and elegance of natural fibres such as cotton, wool, silk, bamboo, hemp and linen are endless. Not only do they support our Australian producers, but they are also comfortable and sustainable fabrics. Whether it's bright, bold florals or understated classics, don't forget to add that finishing touch... bold millinery.

How to Prepare for the Day

While preparing for the Fashions on the Field, always be mindful of Brisbane's weather conditions in August - often cold mornings and sunny, crisp days. In the event of cool or inclement weather, contestants are permitted to style their outfits for the winter season (in this instance both spring and winter season outfits will be judged equally). Make sure that the chosen accessories, millinery and gentlemen’s hats match your seasonal choice.

It's also important to remember that there are different surfaces around the Brisbane Showgrounds including grass, dirt, concrete and steps.

What to Expect on Competition Day

The best part about the iconic Ekka Fashions on the Field Competition is the fun and friendly atmosphere. It's a true celebration of fashion and creativity, with not only the official judges and spectators admiring the outfits but fellow contestants as well. Once the competition has wrapped and the winners have been crowned, there’s still time to enjoy all the fun of the fair at the Ekka.

Celebrate Queensland Style

The Fashions on the Field Competition and the Natural Fibres Fashion Parades attract the who's who of fashion and creativity here at the Show. They're also a true celebration of our primary producers, showcasing natural fibres and materials used in these showstopping fashion ensembles. Don't miss the glam affair that is the Ekka Fashions on the Field Competition, whether you're competing in your finest frock or suit, or watching on in awe as a spectator. Strike a pose!
