What does the RNA stand for?
The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) is a member based not-for-profit organisation established in 1875 and operates the Brisbane Showgrounds, situated 1.5 kilometres from Brisbane's CBD. The RNA's mission is to bring people together to showcase, celebrate and experience agriculture and Queensland.
The RNA runs the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka), Queensland's largest event, on behalf of the community for nine days each year in August.
History and Mission of the RNA
The Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland (RNA) was established in 1875 and since then the RNA has been committed to ensuring the community recognises the vital role agriculture plays in the everyday life of Queenslanders.
Bowen Park was chosen in January 1876 as the site for the first Show - the 'Intercolonial Exhibition of 1876', held from August 22-26 by the RNA.
Since the first Exhibition 'Ekka' was held in 1876, welcoming an estimated 15,000-17,000 people to the opening day (a great feat at a time when the total population of Brisbane was just 20,600), to today when the Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) welcomes up to 400,000 through the gates over 9 days.
The RNA, a member based not-for-profit organisation, remains committed to hosting the Ekka at its original birthplace, the Brisbane Showgrounds.
The Ekka is a celebration of Queensland and it provides a platform for farmers, producers, and artisans to display their products and skills, offering visitors a chance to learn about the state’s agricultural and industrial heritage. The Ekka is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Queensland’s rural communities.
The RNA is also committed to providing first class educational activities and facilities for visitors during Ekka and throughout the year. Along with the iconic Ekka, the organisation runs the Royal Queensland Awards (RQA), a series of six individual competitions unearthing the best produce in Australia, and hosts more than 250 events each year from music festivals to corporate functions and gala dinners, and is home to the state-of-the-art Royal International Convention Centre.
Role on RNA in the Ekka
The Ekka, also known as the Royal Queensland Show, holds a special place in the hearts of Queenslanders. This beloved annual event, which has been celebrated for nearly 150 years, is a vibrant showcase of Queensland's rich agricultural and horticultural heritage and cultural diversity. It is also dedicated to educating the next generation, and providing a platform to celebrate innovation, community and Queensland talent.
Each year the RNA organises the Ekka and brings together people from all walks of life at the Brisbane Showgrounds. On average 400,000 people gather to see thousands of exhibits, 21, 000 competition entries, 10,000 animals, world-class entertainment and taste award-winning food and wine.
The RNA and Ekka brings the country and city together for a true celebration of agriculture during August each year, while showcasing the best of Queensland year-round.
