Purchasing their favourites for friends to try (if they don’t eat them first), foodies will find all the latest trends like coffee in a cone and cotton candy ice cream, plus some old quirky favourites like funnel cakes. There will also be plenty of beverages to try – with a new craft beer alley complete with world-class beers and sample classes, craft rum and of course wine.
Our top food picks
Cotton Candy Ice Creamery – NEW
Imagine an ice cream cone filled with cotton candy and topped with ice cream and lollies - this crazy candy creation is sure to be a huge hit!
Portuguese Custard Tart – NEW
The most iconic Portuguese sweet, this tart has a traditional custard pastry consisting of a crème brûlée-like custard, caramelised in a crust of puff pastry. It was created more than 200 years ago by Catholic Sisters at Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. Find it at the Lisboa Café.
Famous Funnel Cakes – RETURNING AFTER 2 YEARS
An old favourite is returning for the first time since 2014, with funnel cakes back on the menu at Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion. A traditional show food, Ekka guests are sure to love this fried dough creation.
World’s hottest chilli
The Chilli Factory is sure to set Ekka guest’s worlds on fire. They grow the Carolina Reaper chilli, which holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s hottest chilli. Those brave enough will be able to try before they buy – if they can hack the heat they’ll get a sticker saying ‘I survived the Chilli Factory.’
Dippin Dots Ice Cream
Molecular gastronomy cooking is totally in right now and that’s why we love Dippin Dots Ice Cream. Using cryogenic freezing, you can get a cup of little icy beads packed full of flavour from vanilla and chocolate to bubble gum and fairy floss.
If you have enough room for a ruler length gourmet hotdog, then head to Gotzinger Smallgoods. We’re loving their ‘Big 30 cm German Brat’ and ‘Big 30 cm Kransky,’ both on a fresh bun.
Strawberry and Marshmallow Skewer
The popular strawberry and marshmallow skewer drizzled in chocolate definitely ticks the box as an Instaworthy sweet treat. It looks as impressive as it is tasty and you’ll find it at Berry Delicious.
Longboards Loaded Fries
Apart from gourmet burgers, Longboards dishes up loaded chips. Choose between fries covered in slow cooked BBQ pulled pork and topped with cheese or fries topped with popcorn chicken pieces, gravy and cheese sauce.
$2 Cheese Toastie
An Ekka staple, you can’t go past a $2 cheese toastie! It won’t break the bank and it’s absolutely delicious – winning!
Please your cheese cravings with a trip to the Bunya Cheese stand. From gourmet cheese platters to toasted Bunya Gold on sourdough, you’ll find this stand un-brie-lievable.
Crepes & Shakes
We love a good French crepe and at Ekka you’ll find them dressed up with a range of sweet toppings. From Nutella strawberry to caramel banana and even strawberry mascarpone, they’re sure to have your tastebuds satisfied. The Crepe & Shake stand also sells supercharged shakes, with flavours including caramel coconut mars and marshmallow and fairy floss.
Gnocchi Gnocchi Brothers
With their fresh handmade Italian gnocchi, this stall was an absolute hit last year - and with flavours including bolognaise and wild mushroom with truffle sauce, we’re not surprised! They also sell fresh Sicilian cannelloni, the perfect sweet treat.
Vietnamese Rice Paper Rolls
Rice paper rolls have rolled back onto the foodie scene. At Sate House you’ll find flavours Vietnamese favourites prawn and chicken teriyaki, along with a gluten free vegetarian option.
For cupcakes, slices, brownies and premium cakes in every classic flavour you can imagine, head to the Rustic Pastel Artisan Patisserie. They’ll hook you up with red velvet topped with Italian butter cream cupcakes, lemon meringue cakes with homemade lemon curd and chocolate brownies with a crispy outside and soft fudgy inside.
Top beverage picks
Craft beer alley - NEW
For the very first time, Ekka will have its own craft beer alley.
Up to nine breweries will be represented, including two of the champion breweries from the Australian International Beer Awards – Balter Brewing took out the champion medium brewery title while Green Beacon was crowned champion small brewery.
Byron Bay Brewery will also be there and for some Ekka guests this will be their first time trying the beer, as it’s only usually sold at their NSW brewery.
Renowned beer educator Matt Kirkegaard will also be holding tasting classes. He’ll help beer lovers - and even the non-beer drinkers – to find their perfect brew and will educate them on how beer is made and why it tastes the way it does.
There will also be beer and seafood matchings, along with beer and gourmet cheese toasties.
Craft rum, vodka and gin – NEW
For the very first time at Ekka, Beenleigh Artisan Distillers will be serving up everyone’s favourite fancy alcoholic drinks from copper pot rum and ginger ale to Vodka with Apple and Davidson Plum and Gin and Tonic.
Go on your own winery walk about in the Woolworths Fresh Food Pavilion. Eight wine stands, including Golden Grove Estate and Ballandean Estate Wines from the Granite Belt, will sort you out with some top drops.
Coffee in a Cone - NEW
New to Ekka this year is coffee in a cone from the Coffee Galleria - very on trend and guaranteed to be super popular. It’s exactly as it sounds, a piccolo in a chocolate coated cone - delicious!
Vietnamese Nitro Pressed Ice Coffee - NEW
The District 1 stand is bringing a new concept to Ekka this year - cold-brew coffee infused with nitrogen gas on tap! As high pressure forces the cold brew past a disc, it creates a creamy, stout-like effect. They say it creates a much silkier and smoother coffee.
Iced tea is still one of the coolest drinks around. You’ll find many stalls selling this healthy drink in a range of flavours, including the Ice Tea Man and Tea Tonic.
