What better way for students to gain insight into the modern commercial poultry industry than by raising their own laying hens?
The Ekka has partnered with Australian Egg Corporation Limited and Specialised Breeders Australia to provide schools with six (6) eight week old Hy-Line Brown hens. Schools will receive the birds in April 2017 and will be required to grow them to 28 weeks. The aim is to have them laying and ready to compete at the Ekka by Wednesday 9 August, 2017.
Schools are required to submit their three best hens to compete in the 2017 Ekka Poultry, Pigeons, Birds and Eggs Competition.
The competition elements include judging of the birds presented; the eggs collected on an accumulative basis over the first eight days of Ekka; and a project worksheet showing a record of the process.
This competition provides students with the opportunity to:
- Learn about biological science understandings
- Handle poultry
- Consider future employment within the poultry industry
- Compete in the pursuit of agricultural excellence.
Due to popular demand places for this year’s competition are already full.
